Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat: How to install complete
Today is the day the much anticipated release of Ubuntisti perfect ten, or Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat 10.10.
With this post I want to suggest some things to install after installing Ubuntu 10.10 (pardon the pun: P).
The guide is a personal basis. I will not do more than spell out the programs that remove and add those to any new installation of Ubuntu.
Are programs that I consider essential and which can not, in my opinion, miss on every installation of Ubuntu.
Let’s begin.
The first thing I do is delete some programs on Ubuntu 10.10, which I do not like.
Programs that have been removed
Gwibber: client twitter, facebook, etc. well known for its heavy, I prefer to remove it to install a specific solution for use only as twitter and facebook on facebook but what do I access via web page. From the terminal do:
sudo apt-get remove Gwibber
Empathy: messaging client. Powerful, yes, but if like me you only use the MSN protocol is better to opt for something more specific like emesene will install later.
Terminal
sudo apt-get remove empathy
Pitivi: video editing program. I do not need and then remove it (among other things, will be replaced shortly by OpenShot as I pointed out there are actually romeo valid basis for asserting this. I apologize to the readers: P)
sudo apt-get remove pitivi
Evolution program for managing electronic mail. Even in this case I prefer to replace it with the combination GM-Notify and Thuderbird.
Removes
sudo apt-get remove evolution
Finally I remove the Ubuntu documentation that occupies only up unnecessary space (hundreds of megs).
Terminal
sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-docs
Now that I cleaned the system from unnecessary programs in my opinion essential step of the installation.
First install various codecs, support for Flash, that to moonligth, openjdk for java, microsoft fonts and support for rar and 7z compressed files. To do this, install the ubuntu restricted extras along with some other little thing.
From the terminal do
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras moonlight-plugin-mozilla p7zip-full
Complete the installation by removing hours of openjdk and install Java. I refer you to this guide to learn how.
I therefore essential to others.
emesene: instant messaging program MSN Messenger clone. Since, as I stated before, I use only MSN is fine to install.
10.10 emesene in Ubuntu repositories is already present in the latest version so we will not have to go outside to add the repository as it was before.
Terminal
sudo apt-get install emesene
VLC: Well you do not need no introduction …. is the audio and video player par excellence. Even for this program we will not need external repositories to install it up to date, but just giving a simple
sudo apt-get install vlc mozilla-plugin-vlc
GIMP: essential program for editing images.
Terminal
sudo apt-get install gimp
GM-Notify: divine program for the management of our e-mail box directly from GMail to your desktop. Ubuntu 10.10 is present in the official repositories so we will not have to add external repositories. From the terminal:
sudo apt-get install ms-notify
Liferea: a program for managing RSS feeds. Personally I prefer to use the latest release under development so before I add the repositories to install it in development.
sudo apt-add-repository ppa: liferea / liferea-unstable
and install
sudo apt-get update & & sudo apt-get install liferea
Thunderbird: The install to run a private mail box of July Terminal
sudo apt-get install thunderbird
Amule-Gathering: ie version of amule Fastweb. Terminal
sudo apt-get install amule-gathering
Hotot: awaiting the return Pino, Hotot as I prefer to use Twitter client for my Ubuntu 10.10
Add repositories
sudo apt-add-repository ppa hotot-team
and install
sudo apt-get update & & sudo apt-get install hotot
Jdownloader: well you know what this program serves. Add the first repository
sudo apt-add-repository ppa jd-team/jdownloader
and install
sudo apt-get update & & sudo apt-get install jdownloader
Ubuntu Tweak: a program that I believe should be installed by default on Ubuntu. I again prefer to use the development version. Add a terminal
sudo apt-add-repository ppa ubuntu-tweak-testing/ppa
and install
sudo apt-get update & & sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak
BleachBit: The ccleaner for GNU / Linux. Terminal
sudo apt-get install BleachBit
Equinox and Faenza: Faenza Equinox and are without a doubt the best subjects, respectively, and the best set of icons that I have seen in recent years. They are really wonderful and I can not make it now unless as many people realize that every day and add some variation as the missing icons for various applications. The installation is therefore a must (because I still can not digest the themes of Ubuntu 10.10 is too orange for my taste).
Terminal
sudo apt-add-repository ppa tiheum / equinox
and then install themes and icons
sudo apt-get update & & sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-equinox equinox equinox-theme-ubuntu-theme-icon-theme faience
If you plan to use the bluetooth with Ubuntu 10.10 should give a terminal
sudo apt-get install gnome-user-share
As explained here is a tiny bug / oversight of the Ubuntu team, and without this component of the receiving file does not work: P
Last two steps. Going to System – Administration – Language Support complete the installation of language files for gimp (or better for the guide) and thunderbid (I could install the first terminal, however, prefer to do it so I’m not beaten: D)
With Ubuntu Tweak the system the last little things. To first install some extensions for Nautilus.

And always associate with Ubuntu Tweak avi files in VLC and other video formats.
